Alan Jessop to help launch Red Shield Appeal

Alan Jessop, a Salvation Army soldier who has raised over 4 million dollars, has been collecting in and around the Canberra Centre for over 30 years!

The Salvos are inviting everyone to get involved this month of May in Australia’s biggest annual Doorknock event, The Red Shield Appeal.

Aussies around the country have been deeply affected by the many natural disasters that have struck so far this year, and the Salvos aim to mobilise an army of 50,000 volunteers right across our nation to help raise crucial funds to help keep the Salvos’ good work going.

The money raised from the Red Shield Appeal will go towards The Salvation Army’s vast network of services that help Australians in need. Held over the weekends of 18-19 and 25-26 May in Canberra and the surrounding region, the Appeal has set a target of raising $8 million.

“The Red Shield Appeal is a fun and simple way that Australians can really help make a difference in alleviating the hardship being faced by so many people,” says Major David McMurray, Public Relations Secretary for the ACT and South NSW. “Hardship does not discriminate. More Australians from all walks of life are turning to The Salvation Army for help and we need the public’s support now to ensure we can continue to help those doing it tough.”

Over the past 12 months nationally the Salvos have supported more than 38,000 people experiencing homelessness, 14,000 people overcoming addiction, provided over 50,000 financial counselling sessions, given care to 5,000 people experiencing family violence, and assisted more than 150,000 people with emergency relief*.

“We can all be beacons of hope for others,” Major McMurray says, “and by partnering with the Salvos for just a few hours in May, particularly over the Red Shield Appeal weekends, you can give hope where it’s needed most.”

Congratulations to Alan for a fantastic and selfless achievement.
