5 things to do around Canberra this October

Published on 09 October 2017

It’s the middle of spring, and Canberra has never looked better. The long weekends have put everyone in a great mood ahead of summer, and as the days get longer, we’re sending out the call to take full advantage of everything Canberra has to offer.

Here are the top five things to do in and around Canberra this October, because you don’t have to go all the way to Sydney to make the most of your downtime.

1. Floriade Dogs' Day Out 2017

Pose with your pup in the free photo booth, chow down on delicious delicacies at the Pooch Café or soak up some sunshine as you explore Floriade together.

Remember to keep an eye out for doggie delights dotted around the park. Pick up a present for your pooch at the Dogs’ Day Out Market or enter the competition for the best dressed pup to win some goodies. There will be lots of four-legged fun to be had with activities and demonstrations on offer throughout the day.

2. Japanese Film Festival

The Japanese Film Festival in Australia (JFF) is presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney. The JFF started in 1997 with three free film screenings by former Festival Director Masafumi Konomi, and is now one of the largest celebrations of Japanese films in the world.

3. Oktoberfest Parklands

Oktoberfest Parklands will transform Patrick White Lawns by Lake Burley Griffin into a lakeside celebration of the world’s largest beer and food festival, with Craft Beer Halls, Bavarian Food Truck Village, Oompah bands, DJs, traditional dancers, side show alley and a whole host of other entertainment to blow dein mind.

Think Kranski, Pork knuckles, Pretzels and steins of beer (plus German wines & other drinks of course), all while singing a German Oompahpah in an Epic Beer Hall and across the beautiful waterside location just minutes from Civic.

4. Light The night

Join Light The Night for an inspiring lantern walk along the Kingston Foreshore on Friday 13 October. A wonderful evening for the whole family raising awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The event is located opposite Kingston Glassworks and the Fitters Workshop.

Starting at 4pm is the Kingston Night Markets who are supporting the Leukaemia Foundation.

5. Free Yoga at Monaro Mall (Canberra Centre)

How you begin your day can play a big part in how the rest of it unfolds. Yoga is the perfect morning workout for the mind, body and soul. It can help increase energy levels, improve your mental clarity, circulation and posture, and tone your muscles.

The best way to get started is in a group class where an experienced instructor can help you learn the basics, or hone your existing knowledge.

Every Thursday at 7:15am – 8:00am in the event space opposite Endota Spa, we are hosting complimentary yoga classes.
