The pick of the bunch at Floriade 2019

Published on 09 September 2019

The iconic Floriade celebration of spring is about to get underway from Saturday 14 September until Sunday 13 October, and there is so much to see and do. This year’s theme of World in Bloom has been brought to life across 21 in-ground flowerbeds and over 189 portable raised flowerbeds throughout Commonwealth Park. Paired with a program full of live entertainment, food and market stalls, and workshops for young and old, it’s set to be the biggest Floriade yet.

The month-long festival is brimming with things to do, with something for everyone. Here are just some of the top events you won’t want to miss.

For the foodies

The Floriade event: NightFest

There’s no denying we love good food here in Canberra, and at NightFest, that’s exactly what you’ll find. NightFest will be home to even more food trucks and stalls than previous years, including Canberra food favourite Pialligo Estate, who will be taking over Floriade’s main cafe space as well as offering night-time feast options.

When: Thursday 3 October to Sunday 6 October, 6:30pm – 10:30pm each night

For the artists

The Floriade event: Tulip Mania

Flowers are the perfect inspiration for an artistic masterpiece, and at this ticketed event, you will put pastels to paper to draw your own tulip portrait to take home. No art expertise needed, as one of the tutors from NatureArt Lab - a Canberra art school specialising in nature-inspired artwork - will help you hone your skills.

When: Sunday 29 September, 12.30pm-2.30pm

For the music lovers

The Floriade event: The Veronicas at NightFest

The line-up for NightFest this year has all music tastes covered. For those who love to dance to the classics, The Baker Boys are hitting the stage on Thursday 3 October. If you prefer electronic music then stop by to see award-winning Electric Fields on Friday 4 October. The one you definitely won’t want to miss is Australian pop favourites The Veronicas, who will be performing on Stage 88 on the Friday night. Tickets are only $31.95 for adults, $16.50 for concession and juniors.

When: Friday 4 October, 7.45pm-10.15pm

For the kids (and the adults!)

The Floriade event: KidzKlub

There is so much for kids to love about Floriade. Beside wandering through the flower-full gardens, the schedule of activities at KidzKlub will keep them busy - and inspired! The program is packed with free activities over the weekends and school holidays, including arts and craft workshops to make their own floral mobile or paint flower pots; the Active Zone with jumping balls, totem tennis and races run throughout the day; and giant board games, a photo booth and so much more. Bonus: Parents are welcome to just sit back and chill while the kids have their fun. It’s win, win!

When: Numerous dates and times during Floriade

For the green thumbs

The Floriade event: Ikebana workshop

Not sure what Ikebana is? This traditional Japanese floral arranging technique turns blooms into works of art. The perfect way to spruce up your home this spring, under the expert guidance of Ikebana teacher Sachie Terasaki from Ikebana Canberra, you will learn the ins and outs of this century-old art form, and take home your creation at the end of the hour-long class.

When: Sunday 6th October and Saturday 12th October, 2pm-3pm
