The socialites guide to staying warm in winter

Published on 28 May 2019

Cold it may be, but hibernation season? Hardly. Canberra is not the type of city who shuts down just because the mercury has dropped below zero. There’s still plenty to do, drink and eat for those keen to stay snug and socialise all winter long.

City scavenger hunt

Racing around the CBD on your own Amazing Race-inspired scavenger hunt will warm you up in no time. The Canberra City Hustle is an urban treasure hunt that sends you and your team mate (choose your friend wisely!) around the city to complete challenges and solve puzzles. You have from 8am to 3pm to outsmart and outrun the competition. It’s for one day only this Saturday 1st June so cancel your plans and sign up, stat.

Happy hour at Alter Ego

If you need convincing to leave the house, Happy Hour sure helps. From 5pm to 6pm every Sunday in June, Alter Ego are keeping your insides warm and toasty with $6 draught beer and house wine. If you want to make an afternoon of it, the live music kicks off at 1pm until 4pm.

Retro movie night

It may be tempting to cosy up on the couch and watch a movie, but you really can’t beat a big screen with popcorn and Choc Tops. There are plenty of upcoming new releases worth checking out (X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Men in Black: International, for starters), but the one session you definitely shouldn’t skip is the 30th anniversary screening of When Harry Met Sally at Dendy Cinema on Saturday 29th June at 7pm, and Sunday 30th June at 2.15pm. Once a classic, always a classic.

Comedy night out

Laughter is the best cold-weather medicine. Following her sold out season of “Smashing”, Australian comedian Kitty Flanagan (you’ll recognise her from Have You Been Paying Attention) is doing an encore performance at the Canberra Theatre on Saturday 22nd June at 8pm. If you missed her last time, this is your second chance!

*Hot* comfort food

There’s no greater joy in winter than eating all your favourite comfort foods. While soups may be the go-to for most, the best way to put a fire in your belly is with a dozen or so of Gami Chicken’s next-level spicy wings. When the sweating kicks in (and it will), cool your taste buds with one of their locally-brewed beer...then go back for more!
